Elon Musk confirms that the new Tesla Roadster has been postponed to 2022

Elon Musk confirmed that the new Tesla Roadster has been postponed to 2022 – a good two years behind the original schedule.

Tesla Roadster’s Timeline

When first unveiling the next generation Tesla Roadster in 2017, Musk said it will hit the market in 2020.

Tesla began making reservations for the impressive 0-60 mph electric supercar in 1.9 seconds and over 600 miles of range at the inauguration event.

People who wanted to be first in line to get the vehicle had to place between $ 50,000 and $ 250,000 in deposits.

The vehicle’s program was later delayed because the CEO said it was not a priority for Tesla.

Last year, Musk suggested that the Tesla Roadster would be delayed until 2022, as the automaker focused on Cybertruck.

Now, the CEO has confirmed that production of the new Tesla Roadster will not begin until next year:

Musk wrote in Twitter today:

Finishing engineering [of the new Tesla Roadster] this year, production starts next year. With the aim that the launch candidate’s design can be carried out in late summer. The tri-motor drive system and advanced battery work were important precursors.

That’s about two years later than the original schedule, although with a candidate for a road launch this summer, it could mean that the new Roadster could arrive in early 2022.

The S Plaid model is increasing performance

With Tesla now launching the Model Plaid with an already insane capacity of 0-60 mph in less than 2 seconds and a quarter mile in less than 10 seconds, Tesla will have to push the Roadster for superior performance.

Tesla was already provoking a new insane capability with something called a “SpaceX package”, which consists of a lot of cold air thrusters around the car and should result in even better performance.

In discussing how the new performance specifications for the Model S Plaid work on the new Roadster, Musk said the Roadster is a “rocket part”, probably referring to the SpaceX package.
