Elon Musk confirms ‘high demand’ for the updated Tesla Model S / X, the factory restarts after missing parts

Elon Musk confirmed that Tesla received “high demand” for the new updated S and X Models.

The CEO says that the automaker will increase production with a second shift to meet demand, in a new email to employees obtained by Electrek.

Earlier today, we shared a report stating that Tesla shut down a Model 3 production line for two weeks.

We speculate that this could be due to the global shortage of microchips that has affected the automotive industry.

In a new email that Musk sent to Tesla employees, he confirmed the shutdown, which was due to “parts supply problems”, but in fact he said the entire plant was affected for a few days:

We are facing some parts supply problems, so we took the opportunity to bring Fremont for a few days to do equipment upgrades and maintenance.

The previous report only mentioned a single Model 3 production line and for two weeks.

Musk added that the factory is now restarting:

Fremont production resumed yesterday and will accelerate quickly to complete production of the Model 3 / Y in the next few days.

In the email, Musk also commented on the production of the Model S and Model X at the Fremont plant.

He confirmed that the retrofitting for the updated version of the two main electric vehicles is almost complete and that production will increase in the next quarter.

Musk added that Tesla is seeing “high demand” for the new versions, and that they plan to bring back a second production change for the Model S and Model X, something that hasn’t happened in a long time.

The CEO wrote in the email:

The production lines of the Model S / X are almost completed with the retrofitting and will aim for maximum production in the next quarter. Demand is high, so we will soon need to go back to two shifts. Please recommend friends for recruitment.

Sales of the Tesla Model S and Model X have declined in recent years.

It was mainly due to vehicle programs becoming obsolete when Tesla focused on the new Model 3 and Model Y. These new models cannibalized some of the more sophisticated model sales.

Last month, Tesla introduced an updated version of the Model S and Model X that is expected to give a little life to the two main vehicle programs.

When launching the new vehicles, Musk said deliveries should start this month, but it looks like the renovation may have taken longer.

Here is the full email:
