Elliot Page and his wife, Emma Portner, gave up.
The Oscar-nominated “Juno” star, 33, who recently became a transgender, filed for divorce on Tuesday in Manhattan. The pair confirmed their separation in a statement to TODAY.
“After much thought and careful consideration, we made the difficult decision to divorce after our separation last summer. We have the greatest respect for each other and remain close friends,” the statement said.
The ex-couple announced their wedding in a January 2018 Instagram post.
News of their split comes almost two months after Page announced he is transgender in an exciting Instagram post.
“Hello friends, I want to share with you that I am trans, my pronouns are him / them and my name is Elliot”, he wrote in part. “I feel lucky to be writing this. To be here. To have come to this place in my life.”
“I can’t express how remarkable it is to finally love who I am enough to pursue my authentic self,” he added.
Portner responded in the comments. “I love you very much, Elliot,” she wrote.
The 26-year-old dancer later shared a touching message about Page on her own Instagram account, calling the existence of the “Umbrella Academy” star “a gift”.
“I am very proud of @elliotpage,” wrote Portner. “Trans, queer and non-binary people are a gift to this world. I also ask for patience and privacy, but that you join me in fervent support for trans life every day.
“Elliot’s existence is a gift in itself,” added Portner. “Shine sweet E. I love you so much.”
