Elected Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar of Florida announced on Thursday that she will miss the inauguration ceremony for new members of Congress on Sunday in Washington after a positive test for the coronavirus.
Salazar, a Miami-area Republican who defeated Democratic Congresswoman Donna Shalala in one of the biggest upheavals in the House of the election year, was admitted to the hospital overnight on December 23 with cardiac arrhythmia and then tested positive for Covid-19, from according to a statement from your office.
Salazar was treated and released as soon as she stabilized. Following the guidance of medical professionals, Salazar’s office said she would isolate herself at home for at least 14 days while continuing to recover.
“I hope you will forgive me, as I was unable to communicate through social networks, but I was diagnosed with COVID-19”, Salazar wrote on Twitter.
“I am quarantined at home and getting better every day. I am looking forward to starting working for my community, once it is medically permitted.”
Dozens of members of the House and Senate tested positive for the coronavirus and many more were forced to quarantine after coming into close contact with infected people. On Tuesday, elected Congressman Luke Letlow, a Louisiana Republican, died of Covid-19 complications.
More than 340,000 Americans died of coronavirus and nearly 19.8 million were diagnosed with Covid-19.
