There is no doubt that Dave Chappelle will go down in history as one of the greatest comedians that has ever traveled the planet thanks in large part to the stand-up specials that put him on the map, and although he is undoubtedly a masterful storyteller , listening to your jokes usually requires you to suspend your disbelief, because the idea of a baby selling crack on a street corner is as much fun as it is absurd.
Dave Chappelle went all-in on the absurd when he turned his attention to Chappelle Show, using the skit comedy format to their advantage, creating a wide variety of ridiculous scenarios and providing viewers with infinitely quoted levels of hilarity from Nick Cannon in the process.
It is virtually impossible for me to choose my favorite design from Chappelle Show, but watching the man behind him and the rest of the gang recreate the tales that the late Charlie Murphy told in the “True Hollywood Stories” segments would probably be near the top of my list.
The recurring part made its big debut during the show’s second season, when Rick James joined Murphy to reflect on some of the wild nights they had together, with Chappelle playing the latter to recreate some of his misfortunes.
Chappelle Show also told us a supposedly true story about the time when Charlie and Eddie Murphy were invited to Prince’s house and found themselves playing basketball against the musical icon, where the brothers and their team were totally defeated before Prince invited them to join eat some pancakes.
In the episode, Murphy said the story was 100% true and seemed offended when a producer questioned its accuracy, but I doubt that he is the only person who assumed that it was all part of the story. However, based on what Eddie Murphy recently revealed during a conversation with Jimmy Fallon, this is not the case.
On Thursday, Murphy entered The Tonight Show and was asked to attest to the veracity of the story that his older brother told, which the actor claimed to be “totally and absolutely accurate” (the discussion starts around 6:00 am).
Chappelle obviously took some creative liberties (Murphy says he played with the clothes he wore at the club), but it looks like the phrase “Shirts against Blouses” was actually pronounced and Prince’s team “kicked the shit out” of his opponents. Unfortunately, the pancakes didn’t show up, but based on what Murphy said, I have no reason to doubt that they were served after they were served on the court.
