Eddie Murphy reveals that his acting hiatus came after the Razzie Award for ‘Worst Actor of All Time’: ‘I would only take a break for one year … six years pass’
His distinctions as an actor range from an Oscar for Best Supporting Act to the Award for Worst Actor of All Razzie.
And Eddie Murphy revealed this week that the last ‘award’ was the main reason he took a long break from the craft over the past decade.
The comedian, who will turn 60 next month, went through the WTF podcast with Marc Maron on Tuesday, to discuss his new lead role in the sequel Coming 2 America and also to reflect on his film career.

“I was making shit movies,” Murphy said of his season in recent decades, when he saw him in Razzie-winning pickles like Norbit and Meet Dave.
‘I was like,’ This is not fun. They’re giving me Razzies … ‘The son of a bitch gave me the worst actor of all Razzies. [So I thought], “Maybe it’s time to take a break,” he continued.
‘I was just going to take a break for a year, then suddenly, six years passed, and I’m sitting on the couch and I could sit on the couch and not get off it, but I don’t want the last pile of shit that they give me. come do [to be] bulls ** t, ‘Professor Maduco’s star added later.

‘The plan was to do Dolemite, Saturday Night Live, Coming 2 America and then stand and see how I felt afterwards.
‘At least then they will know that I am [still] funny – added Eddie.
After Murphy’s incredible success in the 90s and early 2000s with films like The Nutty Professor, Dr. Dolittle, Bowfinger and others, he made a series of box office and critical failures like The Adventures of Pluto Nash, I Spy and Showtime, all launched in 2002

Later, he ‘won’ three Razzies – all in different acting categories – for the cheap Nutty Professor of 2007, the imitation of Norbit in 2007.
After a few more bombs, including Meet Dave in 2008 and Imagine That a year later, Murphy won the award for worst actor of the Razzie decade in 2010.
However, it cannot be ignored that, in the midst of all this, Eddie was recognized with an Oscar nomination for his excellent supporting role in 2006’s Dreamgirls.

Still, the years between 2010 and 2020 saw only a handful of original roles from comedian SNL, including Tower Heist from 2011, Mr. Church from 2016 and Dolemite Is My Name in 2019, for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe.
This year, of course, Eddie reprized one of his most valuable roles; that of Prince Akeem of Coming To America, 1988, following the Amazon Prime Coming 2 America.
And the sequences will continue to arrive for the star, as his next two projects are Beverly Hills Cop 4, as well as Triplets, which will make him join forces with Danny DeVito and Arnold Schwarzenegger after his success in 1988, Twins.
