Eddie Murphy recalled his infamous basketball game against Prince.
Murphy thought about the story when Jimmy Fallon asked the actor what memory came to mind in relation to the legendary artist. The basketball game also included Eddie’s late brother, Charlie Murphy, and was shown on Chappelle Show. Eddie said the game happened after Prince asked him and his group to play, and admitted that he was not wearing the proper clothes for a game.
“We were in club clothes and Prince was in that outfit that was in the ‘Kiss’ video, where he was wearing the short shirt and the buttoned leather jacket,” Murphy told Fallon around 6:10. “He had on that outfit and a small gold chain around his waist.”
“It was Prince and a guy named Micki Free who used to go out. They used to wear this type of Prince clothing, so my brother said, ‘Okay, it’s going to be shirts against blouses.’ And they got together and the blouses won. They beat us, ”said Murphy.
Fallon asked Murphy about a memory linked to Muhammad Ali, whom Murphy referred to as “his hero”. He continued: “I didn’t get to go out with him, but I did meet him a few times. … On my 40th birthday, he gave me a plaque with a glove. It was like, ‘From your brother, Muhammad Ali.’ My most precious thing is this cool little Ali sign.
Murphy’s next film Coming 2 America is scheduled to launch on March 5 via Amazon Prime Video. The 1988 comedy sequel also features Arsenio Hall, Jermaine Fowler, Leslie Jones, Kiki Layne, Wesley Snipes, James Earl Jones, Shari Headley, John Amos and Tracey Morgan
“We never thought about making a sequel for the film. We thought it was over because the story ended with him leaving, it looked like they would live happily ever after and that was the end of the story, ”Murphy told Fallon about the sequel. “And then the film became a cult film, you know. Of all the films I’ve made, Coming to America is the one that made its way into culture in all these different ways, ”he added.
Murphy and Hall were also evaluated by The New York Times earlier this week, where Murphy blurted out that Ryan Coogler wanted to make a Coming to America sequence, and approached the actor about it before he directed Black Panther.
“I meet him and he says, I want to do a Coming to America sequence, ”explained Murphy. “He had an idea for Michael B. Jordan to play my son and he would be looking for a wife. I thought, so the film would be about the son, it’s not our characters, we’ve already done that. It didn’t come together. “Murphy added,” But it all got me thinking, maybe we should do a sequel. “
