Eddie Murphy returns to one of his most memorable roles with Coming 2 America, the long-awaited sequel to his 1988 hit. The sequel shows Murphy’s King Akeem, once again setting out on a journey to America, and brings back familiar faces from the first film, like Arsenio Hall, James Earl Jones, John Amos, Louie Anderson, and more. Craig Brewer, who directed Murphy in the excellent Dolemite is my name, commands the sequence. A new Coming 2 America trailer arrived before the film’s release in March – watch below.

It’s been a long time since Coming to America arrives in theaters and returning to a film – even a beloved film – so many years later is often a recipe for disaster. But people will undoubtedly be excited to check out Coming 2 America, as Eddie Murphy is reprising one of his most popular roles. And while the production of Murphy’s film in recent years has been somewhat unstable, the Dolemite is my name proved that he is still as funny now as he was in his glory days.
Here is the official synopsis of Coming 2 America: “Set in the lush and real country of Zamunda, the newly crowned King Akeem (Eddie Murphy) and his trusted confidant Semmi (Arsenio Hall) embark on a new and hilarious adventure that takes them across the world from their great African nation to Queens, New York – where it all started. “
A previous synopsis goes even further on what we can expect from the sequence:
Set after the events of the first film, ex-prince Akeem Joffer (Eddie Murphy) will become king of Zamunda when he finds out he has a son he has never met in America – a Queens native named Lavelle (Jermaine Fowler). In honor of his royal father’s (James Earl Jones) dying desire to prepare this son as the Crown Prince, Akeem and Semmi (Arsenio Hall) left for America once again

I sincerely hope Coming 2 America It turns out that the wait was worth it. When Murphy is on, he really enabled and the results can be hilarious. That said, I’m a little apprehensive about the film being rated PG-13. I’m not saying that a comedy needs to be censored to be successful, but I think we can all agree that Murphy is funnier when he’s not limited. Then again, Murphy rated under 13 Crazy teacher it was a huge success, so what the hell do I know? At the very least, Murphy is clearly committed to this film, as he has been talking about doing it for several years.
Coming 2 America will arrive at Amazon Prime Video in March 5, 2021.
