Earthquake in Argentina: 6.4 earthquake strikes San Juan province, no tsunami warning issued

A series of aftershocks followed across the country. A 5.0 magnitude aftershock struck 27 kilometers (about 16.8 miles) south-southwest of Nueve de Julio, about 1,000 km (620 miles) east of the first earthquake and almost 20 minutes later.

Then a 4.9 magnitude earthquake came in the same area as the first, followed by a 5.3 magnitude aftershock.

Earthquakes of magnitude 4.9, 5.0 and 5.3 are considered secondary tremors, as they are smaller in magnitude than the main earthquake and in the same area.

Based on available data, there is currently no tsunami threat, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC).

In its preliminary statement, the PTWC recorded the depth of the earthquake at about 20 kilometers (12.43 miles).

It was a “strong” earthquake, said CNN en Espanol reporter Agostina Montaño in San Juan, adding that everything fell off the shelves in her home.

This is a story in development, more to come.
