Early Birds and Line Skippers: Mass Vax event in Eugene had some problems

Over the weekend, Lane County Public Health had its most challenging mass vaccination clinic COVID-19 to date. The authorities say that about 15% of the people who attended did not have an appointment.

Some mistook the pre-registration confirmation email for an invitation to be vaccinated. It is not. Spokesman Jason Davis said that some people fear they won’t get a chance if they don’t come early.

“These clinics are not on a first-come, first-served basis,” he said. “That’s why we schedule the vaccine. Please, please, don’t show up early. “

Early risers were simply getting in the way, Davis said, and that caused delays for everyone. Some tried to “skip the line” by getting out of the vehicle and walking to the clinic. Vaccinators discourage this and say it will not get you vaccinated any faster.

Public health predicts a significant increase in the number of people vaccinated. Starting next week, the county will receive 6,400 weekly doses for at least one month. Davis said the allocation is based on the elderly population and the county’s demonstrated ability to be shot in the arms of people.
