The Eagles are on the verge of a new era in the franchise’s history. As they continue to prepare for this overhaul, they are moving from some previous key pieces to the previous regime. The latest is wide receiver Alshon Jeffery, which Philadelphia will launch at the start of the new league next month, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.
This move is not very surprising, as the Eagles have already separated from veteran receiver DeSean Jackson. With Jackson out the door and Jeffery’s pending release, Philadelphia is clearly sending the message that they are looking for a younger direction in the receiving position, among other points on the list. Eagles too allegedly restructured Jeffery’s contract back in early January to provide some relief from the ceiling. Changing completely in the coming weeks could be an attempt to gain even more room for maneuver, as the club is currently without a cap.
Jeffery has spent the past four seasons with the Eagles, which includes the winning Super Bowl campaign in 2017. He originally signed a one-year contract with the club that season and proved to be a key player on the road to that unprecedented title. During the postseason, the 31-year-old catcher took 12 passes for 219 yards and three touchdowns in these three disputes. In Philadelphia’s Super Bowl LII victory over the New England Patriots, Jeffery totaled 73 receiving yards and a touchdown.
In early December of that season, he signed a $ 52 million four-year extension with the team, which had one season left.
While Jeffery was dominant during the early stages of his Eagles career, the former South Carolina run-off contender struggled to stay on the pitch. He has failed to play a full season of 16 games in the past three years, which includes a 2020 campaign in which he was limited to just seven games.
During his last season in Philadelphia, Jeffery took six passes for 115 yards and a touchdown.
