Eagles News: Comparing Jalen Hurts and Bobby Hoying

Let’s go to Philadelphia Eagles links …

Why Jalen Hurts is not Bobby Hoying in Roob’s 10 observations – NBCSP
Many people are comparing Jalen Hurts to Bobby Hoying as a warning not to get too attached to what Hurts does in his early games, and that’s fair. Hoying was indeed fantastic in his first three career starts in 1997, playing for 835 yards with six TDs, an INT and a passer rating of 98.1. A few things to keep in mind: Hoying was 25 and was not a newbie. Hurts is 22 years old. Hoying had already played in eight preseason games and had two full seasons before he had a chance to start. Hurts doesn’t either. Hoying also put Irving Fryar and Ricky Watters on the pass receipt and a coach committed to the running game to ease the pressure. Hurts had none of that. And most of Hoying’s production in those three games – 4 out of 6 TDs – came against Bengals’ defense, in 29th position. Hurts won defense No. 1 Saints and launched three TDs against defense No. 10 Cardinals. Finally, Hoying was a statue in his pocket and when he started to struggle to throw the ball, he had no option of retreating. Wound legs are fall-proof. Not drawing conclusions. Time will tell how good Hurts is. But while there are some similarities, I have a hunch that Hurts won’t be leaving the league in a few years, like Hoying.

Three important numbers for week 16: Eagles vs. Cowboys – BGN
5.0 – It is the amount of yards / cargo that the Cowboys are allowing this year. You are tied with the highest number in the league. It is very difficult in Dallas. Although they were solid against defenders on the ground, giving up just 280 yards on 60 loads, they bleed in the base race game: no team saw more handoffs against them, and only the Houston Texans gave up more gross yards. Philadelphia must be considered an attack in the first place, now, having largely reversed the script of its offensive philosophy since the insertion of Jalen Hurts in the starting lineup. Against the Cardinals last week, they were far more dependent on initial defeats than they were all year round.

Five up / down for the Eagles’ week 16 showdown. Cowboys – PhillyVoice
Eagles bags allowed: 3.5. The Eagles’ offensive line allowed the worst number of 59 NFL sacks in 14 games, and they maintained their old tricks in last week’s defeat to the Cardinals, allowing the agile and fast Hurts to be knocked down six times. With veterans Lane Johnson, Brandon Brooks and Jason Peters away – in addition to young Andre Dillard and Jack Driscoll – the Eagles’ offensive line began a remarkable 13 different formations in 14 games, an NFL record. DeMarcus Lawrence stands out from the outside and keeping him away from Hurts can be a struggle for the Eagles to attack. It will be interesting to see if Hurts makes more quick passes to try to ease the fight that the offensive line can have in this one. Hurts will be able to extend several plays, but not all. ON.

A new challenge – Iggles Blitz
On Sunday, Hurts will face his weakest opponent and weakest defense. The fans know this and think the Eagles are going to kick Dallas’s ass. This can happen, but it is not a lock. The Cowboys have won 3 out of 5 games. They hope to make it to the playoff. This is as confident as Dallas has been since August. Their defense is still a problem, but they have enough Hurts tape to study. They can now see you off the bench, as a running QB and as a pocket QB. They will be as prepared as possible. On the other hand, the Cowboys will lose three games. DT Antwaun Woods, LB Leighton Vander Esch and S Xavier Woods are out. A porous defense will have no players at each level. Eagles are favorites with three points, so it’s not just fans who expect a Hurts win.

Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys fighting for possible playoff chance – ESPN
Statistics to know: Hurts were more successful in protecting the ball this season than Wentz. He turned the ball twice in 198 clicks, a 1.0% rate. This is the sixth lowest turnover rate among 46 QBs with 100 clicks this season. Wentz turned the ball in 2.5% of his snaps, the third largest in the NFL. His 19 moves are still more in the NFL, despite having sat in the last two games.

A sample of six packages: DeSean Jackson is active; What does that mean? – PE.com
The really interesting news: the Eagles activated the wide receiver DeSean Jackson from the Injured Reserve list. Clearly, they saw enough of him in practice this week to think he can help in Dallas. Jackson has only played four games this season and hasn’t played since the Giants’ first game on October 22. Jackson has had such a tormented injury two seasons since he returned to Philadelphia and it looked like the Eagles were turning the page on the position with the emergence of their young receivers. Jackson has 13 receptions for 155 yards this season. He’s an intriguing addition to the passing attack, for sure. The speed is there. The deep threat is significant. How much impact can Jackson have for an attack that wants to be multifaceted against Dallas?

Eagles-Cowboys cheat sheet: predictions, important matches, lineup news, stats and more – The Athletic
Sheil Kapadia: Both teams are still alive at NFC East. Hurts gave the Eagles some energy and, if nothing else, at least made them fun. Watching the Eagles for the first 13 weeks seemed like a chore. They were one of the most boring teams in the league. Cowboys may be without a number of defensive holders on Sunday, including linebacker Leighton Vander Esch (ankle). I think Hurts moves the ball consistently and leads the Eagles to victory. Eagles 31, Cowboys 24.

Thinking With Head And Heart: Why Eagles Need To Extend Brandon Graham’s Contract | NJ.com review
That is why the Eagles must extend – and not leave – their relationship with Graham in this off-season. Graham is expected to earn $ 13 million in the last year of his business. However, signing it to an extension and converting $ 10 million of the existing salary into an immediate bonus would save the Eagles $ 10 million in the salary cap, according to Pro Football Focus salary cap consultant Brad Spielberger. The team could then distribute the bonus money over a three or four year span. With an estimated $ 70 million debt limit waiting for them, pulling a $ 10 million chunk out of that hole, while rewarding local talent that is still performing at a high level, is a win-win scenario.

Fantasy Football week 16 ranking: QB – Rotoworld
Jalen Hurts’ second career start was the sixth highest fantasy quarterback performance of the season. He came against a Cardinals Defense that has been anything but a crushing place. The Cowboys? They are a crushing place. It is a lot of faith to put in such a limited curriculum, but the advantage is such that it will be almost impossible to leave the Hurts on the benches for the fantasy finals.

Report: Ezekiel Elliott will play on Sunday – PFT
A week ago, an injury kept Ezekiel Elliott out of a game for the first time in his career. Tony Pollard replaced him against the 49ers and had a longer run (40), a longer reception (30) and more scrimmage yards (132) than Elliott had in any game this season. The Cowboys listed Elliott (calf) as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Eagles. The initial running back had limited training throughout the week. Elliott, however, will play, reports Todd Archer of ESPN. [BLG Note: Seems like good news for the Eagles. The Cowboys will waste touches on Zeke instead of giving them to the more efficient Pollard.]

How the Eagles’ defense has changed since the last time the Cowboys saw them – Blogging The Boys
Maybe Kellen Moore will try to put a few more strokes on the field with this poor secondary, but Michael Gallup’s uncertain threatened status can complicate that, even if he can dress and play. Even so, his approach to getting the ball out of Dalton’s hands quickly suits this defense, which was sometimes cut by yards after receiving. This Eagles defense may have been playing a little better in the past few weeks, their DVOA numbers have increased by minimal gains, to be sure, but they still depend on their defensive line creating an effective quick pass. With a more experienced quarterback this time, the Cowboys can separate this side, as long as the offensive line prevents the quick pass from impacting things.

Updates on injuries in Washington: Terry McLaurin OUT, Antonio Gibson returning, Alex Smith still decided in playing time – Hogs Haven
We received an update on Alex Smith’s injury before the final Saturday Night Football game, and now we have updates on the status of Terry McLaurin and Antonio Gibson. There is not much good news for the Washington Football Team’s attack in these updates. Ian Rapoport reported that Alex Smith was in pain today, while trying to recover from a calf injury that forced him to miss last week’s game. He said the optimism that he will play is not the same as at the beginning of the week, which was said by other reporters throughout the week. Smith is still considered a playing time decision, but the team raised Steven Montez from the squad again. If Smith is unable to play again, Dwayne Haskins Jr. will start again with Taylor Heinicke and Montez supporting him.

Boise State coaching search reportedly dropped to 3. – OBNUG
Kellen Moore, Dallas Cowboys OC. Kellen Moore is almost a god in Boise, Idaho and would move the fan base and booster needle in a BIG way. He went from player to coach of QB and after OC of America’s Team ™ in record time and is considered a young and brilliant coach. Yes, the Cowboys stinks of ice this year, but that’s mostly in your defense. Before Dak Prescott got hurt and his O-line made it to the training team, they were putting in silly numbers. With the offensive weaponry that the Broncos currently have (but didn’t always know how to use), that could be a big advantage. Also, Kellen’s first game as HC would put asses on the seats at Albertsons Stadium … it wouldn’t matter if we were playing The Little Sisters of the Poor (aka Idaho). My only reticence with Kellen is the recruitment aspect – he never did that. Finger shoots.

What Sunday of week 16 means for the 2020 NFL playoff image – DraftKings Nation
The two big games of the day are Colts-Steelers and Rams-Seahawks. Pittsburgh has collapsed in recent weeks and a defeat, coupled with a Browns victory, would create a draw at the start of the Week 17 teams’ clash in Cleveland. The Rams lost a shock to the Jets last week, but can return to first place with a win over Seattle to secure a head-to-head tie. We could have an NFC East champion at the end of Sunday. The Giants travel to Baltimore, while Washington hosts Carolina. Washington closes the division with a victory and defeat for the Giants. Meanwhile, the Cowboys receive the Eagles and the loser is eliminated from the playoffs, regardless of what happens to Washington and New York.
