Eagles News: A league source says Howie Roseman is the “only problem” in Philadelphia

Let’s go to Philadelphia Eagles links …

Eagles mailbag: Stay with Jalen Hurts? Why is Howie Roseman still powerful? – NBCSP
This is not to say that Roseman did a good job or even that he deserves to still be in power. In fact, many people who recently left the organization and some still inside the building think it is the franchise’s biggest problem. A league source recently told me that he thinks Roseman is the “only problem” in Philadelphia. But I don’t think Roseman is a GM for the rest of his life, as some have suggested. Sure, the Super Bowl gave him a longer guide than Doug Pederson, but his vision for the team’s future is also in line with Lurie’s. The only thing I know about Lurie, though, is that he won’t like this realization that the Eagles don’t know what they’re doing and he definitely doesn’t like it when the Eagles become the butt of jokes. Remember, Lurie has taken Roseman out of personal power before, so it’s not impossible that it will happen again in the future. I still don’t think Roseman is going anywhere anytime soon, but this whole Wentz thing is a catastrophic organizational failure (Wentz also deserves some blame) and if the Eagles can’t recover as they expect in the coming seasons, then even Roseman can not be immune.

Carson Wentz is easy to blame, but Howie Roseman is the only constant in Eagles’ dysfunction – Inquirer
If Julio Jones gets that pass in the final zone, here’s what history shows: -Three changes in coach in nine years, each after a season of epic dysfunction. -Four losing seasons in those nine years. – Wide receivers or cornerbacks written and developed, and two franchise quarterbacks have been out of town since 2009. – Three seasons of 10+ wins in the last 10 years, two of them by a guy who supposedly took the organization to the ground. An 81-78-1 record during that period. – An ever-changing command structure, in which no one ever recognizes responsibility. There are many people in this city who are facilitators, too quick to swallow the organizational narrative about the culprit of the moment. Donovan McNabb, Andy Reid, Chip Kelly, Carson Wentz – not to mention little players like Groh, who have received a ridiculously exaggerated slice of the blame. Each time, they move on, and the world dawns again. Ding dong, the bad guy is gone, our nightmare is over. It is funny. Even Wentz’s most vociferous critics began to turn to less precarious opinions. They see that the Colts have a solid offensive line, an excellent defense, a powerful racing game, some promising receivers, a respected technical team. The narrative is already changing from “Wentz cannot win” to “Wentz cannot win here”. The problem is that they don’t ask the obvious question. If he can win there, not here, why exactly?

Carson Wentz and the Eagles share the blame for what led to their separation – BGN
“That relationship has been … let me use the word” tense “. It’s been tense, I think, for the past two or three years. And what kinda catches me, and it’s double, the fault is double. It is Wentz’s fault for being the petulant child that now everyone knows he can be and sometimes is. It also falls on Eagles and Howie Roseman. Again, because here is this petulant child, well, what do you do with a petulant child? You slap their hand, go to the corner, stay calm, that’s your punishment. He never received any of that. What he got – and that’s where the eagles are missing – they made his behavior possible. They enabled that right. They should have put their foot down and said, no, you are not going to turn around and put this franchise on the floor. Which, in my opinion, he did by holding this team hostage. Playing this game in public, regardless of how much Wentz wants to turn around and said through different connections, he sees no point in responding now with different things. Well, no, you must answer. You have to turn around and face that criticism. And what bothered the guys, or at least the guys I spoke to, their problem is that he’s asking for an exchange, so he’s trying to cut us off. And secondly, he is asking for an exchange and is moving away from the competition with Jalen Hurts. Because I don’t think you would find Jalen Hurts moving away from Carson Wentz. Or I don’t think Carson Wentz would back down with Joe Montana’s next coming. He’s going to turn around – from what I know and what I heard about Jalen Hurts – he’s going to fight, he’s going to hold on. And the last time I looked, it’s basically Philadelphia. This is this fan base. That’s where people can turn and bond with a guy like that, unlike someone like Carson Wentz, and I’ll say that, he ran away. And it bothered guys. “

Mailbox: What are the best and worst case results for choosing the Eagles-Colts 2022 conditional draft? – PhillyVoice
I think the best scenario is if it is not good, but also not so badly that it is banned in favor of Jacob Eason or Jacoby Brissett or whoever number 2 of them is. At first glance, I thought the Colts being in a terrible South AFC was bad for the Eagles, since the Colts will have a good chance of winning the division. They are probably the favorites now. However, the Colts being in that shit division is also the Eagles’ best chance of getting a good choice in the first round. In theory, the Colts could have a bad season and still be candidates in December, fall apart late and end up with something like, ohhh, saaayyy, a 6-10 record. For example, look at NFC East last year. The Eagles were not eliminated until they lost in Week 16 and are in sixth place, as you well know. The worst case scenario is if Wentz gets hurt around week 10 or 11 or something, and the Colts go into the playoffs anyway. In that case, the choice will be between the 50s or 60s, which would be a disaster.

Kapadia: Eagles writing a QB at No. 6? You better believe you’re at stake – The Athletic
The argument for waiting is that they can add a top player in a different position at No. 6. The squad is devoid of young talent. A big reason for Wentz’s negotiation was to position himself better for 2022, when they will have more limit space. They can buy a year with Hurts, increase the squad and decide what to do in the next off-season, when they have more information. A segment of the fan base would prefer the Eagles not even thinking about using their first-round pick on a quarterback. They saw Wentz fail in part because of the lack of talent around him. They saw Roseman use a second-round pick in a quarterback last year. They want to at least give Hurts a chance. Choosing a defender in sixth position, or even leveling up, can be another unpopular decision. But given how we have seen Lurie and Roseman operating in similar situations in the past, it is absolutely an option that the Eagles will strongly consider.

Without Carson Wentz, will the Eagles hand over the keys to Jalen Hurts? – ESPN
We know, for a start, that Eagles decision makers like Hurts. There were mixed opinions about him inside the building that preceded last year’s project, but he did have some strong supporters, including Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie, the sources said. Hurts brought the attack to life when he took Wentz’s place in the last quarter of the season and led Philadelphia to a week 14 victory against the New Orleans Saints in their first career. But Hurts cooled some on the stretch and ended with a 52% completion rate and six touchdowns for four interceptions, while running for 354 yards and three scores. Last season, Hurts confirmed his chance of success in the NFL, but given the small sample size and mixed results on the pitch, it would be impossible to know for sure if he is the guy.

Extra Eagles questions and answers: Will Jalen Hurts replace Carson Wentz as a full-back? Should Tyrell Williams be the target of the free agent? – NJ.com
Is Tyrod Taylor a good fit for the Eagles as a veteran QB now? Kaye: As I wrote on Tuesday, Taylor would be an excellent Hurts veteran mentor / reserve, if the Eagles decided to move in that direction. As NJ Advance Media reported in 2019, the Eagles were interested in Taylor before he signed with the Los Angeles Chargers to work with the current Eagles offensive coordinator, Shane Steichen. With Steichen now in Philadelphia, it would make sense to have Taylor’s mentor Hurts, as the veteran is at a point in his career where he is a premium backup and not a beginner. Taylor won many games in this league – including taking Buffalo Bills to the playoffs for the first time in more than 20 years, just three years ago. Hurts and Taylor also have similar playing styles, which would allow the attack to be in sync if Hurts were injured or failed on the bench.

Ranking the quarterbacks of the 2016 NFL Draft 5 years later – SB Nation
No. 2: Carson Wentz. I wrote a lot about the problems that led to the fall of Wentz in Philadelphia, and that is what makes him second on this list. When Wentz is on, he is the best defender in the class. When he’s connected and things are going his way, Wentz could rightfully be one of the best defenders in the NFL. He showed this during the team’s run in the 2017 Super Bowl before getting hurt. There was no shortage of conversation if Wentz was the NFL MVP. Now, things are very different. There is no doubt that he needs to be completely destroyed and rebuilt by the Colts, where he will need to learn a good deal of humility and also how to trust his offensive line again. It’s a big task, but Frank Reich knows him well. Looking ahead, I just feel better about Wentz’s prospects than about Goff’s, which is why I have him in second place.

The next few weeks will tell us a lot about how the Cowboys plan to deal with Dak Prescott – Blogging the boys
It is not breaking news to say that the coming weeks are going to tell us a lot about how the Dallas Cowboys are going to deal with the Dak Prescott contract situation. In addition to the literal truth of this idea, the point we are here to discuss is that Cowboys should start dropping some bread crumbs relatively soon. Very soon. Starting next Tuesday, February 23, teams can start putting the franchise tag on players and have until March 9 to do so. These are just two important dates in relation to the franchise brand, since July 15 is the other (unfortunately, the NFL’s 2021 Draft is among them).
