Although EA has issued more than 25,000 notices and suspensions, and has banned more than 9,000 accounts for “inappropriate or offensive content” since the launch of FIFA 21 Last year, you may be shocked to learn that the game still has a problem with racist whites who use certain game systems and modes to act like idiots.

How it is Eurogamer research reveals, although much of our attention (and presumably from EA) falls on regular multiplayer, especially FIFA’s flagship of Ultimate Team, the low-profile Pro Clubs mode is “riddled with racism” and has been that way for more than a decade.

Some examples include:

Racist players, using the “defense of the joke”, abused the comment system to, for example, define the name of their players’ comment as “banana”, in order to nickname black players with the term. Some players would also change their player comment name to “negro” (using football players whose surname is Negro), or “Khune” (using commentary by Itumeleng Khune, the South African goalkeeper of Kaizer Chiefs FC), to offend . Players also reported encountering racist caricatures through the faces of custom-made players.

Part of the problem here is that the Pro Clubs mode, which allows users to create a player and / or team and participate in 11v11 online games, does not make their reporting systems clear to players.

In reply to Eurogamer report, EA says that “smarter monitoring and mitigation technology” will be “launched in the coming months”, although the effectiveness of this against some of the tactics highlighted above has not yet been proven.
