EA, BioWare cancel Anthem overhaul

The story of EA and BioWare’s besieged action RPG Hymn apparently ended. According to an official BioWare blog post, the ambitious “overhaul” project for the jet fighter game is dead. The team that was assigned to rebuild the game in better shape was assigned to work on other BioWare projects, particularly Dragon Age 4 It is the next Mass effect games.

From what we saw in the game’s release version in March 2019, EA and BioWare clearly wanted the game to receive regularly updated content, but negative reviews (including mine) made it clear that BioWare needed to get back on the drawing board. Despite some good ideas and fun flight controls, HymnThe basic core of the game needs a serious touch-up before we return to the game.

Enough singing the Hymn

The then general manager Casey Hudson made a statement in February 2020 acknowledging these criticisms. After listing aspects of the game that needed work, he offered a promise to fans: that BioWare would complete “the fundamental work … to bring out the full potential of the experience … work specifically to reinvent the main game cycle. with clear goals, motivating challenges and progression with significant rewards – preserving the fun of flying and fighting in a vast science fantasy setting. ”

However, 10 months later, Hudson left BioWare, as well as Dragon Age 4 executive producer Mark Darrah. BioWare announced this news with guarantees that projects like Dragon Age 4 would continue quickly, but none of that day’s blog posts, including one written by Hudson, included any formal guarantee that “Hymn Next “was in similar good shape.

Two weeks ago, Jason Schreier of Bloomberg reported that HymnThe development of the company’s “reinvention” was under serious scrutiny by EA executives, who would decide whether the project would continue or die. According to Schreier, BioWare’s proposal for EA would be to expand its team of 30 people to a number close to 90, in order to match the scope of the work. From the sound of BioWare’s announcement on Wednesday, the reported meeting did not go well for Hymn.

This relocated team will certainly have their hands full with other projects, particularly the sequences previously announced for Dragon Age and Mass effect. So far, EA has just announced a release date for an upcoming BioWare game: the remastered Mass Effect Legendary Edition, scheduled for release on PCs and consoles on May 14.
