Return stories take on all shapes and sizes.
The most prolific recovery comes from injury. Alex Smith knows this form well, having achieved the most incredible comeback in NFL history, and is chosen for the Comeback Player of the Year award in 2020.
Another type of return is not the type that is so easily discussed or portrayed: a player who fought both on and off the field with the rigors of playing in the NFL, changing his career after summoning it prematurely.
Smith’s former teammate, Dwayne Haskins, plays a player who tries to make that kind of comeback.
Smith, 36, who mentored people like Colin Kaepernick and Patrick Mahomes, said during a recent interview with Yahoo Sports’ Charles Robinson and Terez Paylor, that Haskins can change the situation if he cuts off outside noise by limiting his ability on the pitch .
“The first thing I hope with Dwayne – and I told him that – is that you don’t stand a chance until you eliminate many of the distractions that happen in your life,” said Smith, via NBC Sports Washington. “It is difficult as a young player, as a young choice in the draft, certainly as a defender with a lot of weight and expectations.”
Haskins was a sensationalist choice of the first round from Ohio. He lasted less than two years in Washington before Ron Rivera and his team had seen enough. The football team eliminated QB after just 13 career matches. Haskins not only fought on the field, but was also criticized for poor preparation and violation of the COVID-19 protocol in 2020.
As Smith noted, the talent is there for Haskins to change his career.
“Certainly, a lot has worked against him in the past two years that hasn’t allowed him to reach his potential. He’s a guy who has a lot of talent. A lot of talent. And he’s a good boy,” said Smith.
After being cut by Washington before the end of the season, Haskins attracted the interest of the Carolina Panthers and this week signed a reserve / future contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Haskins’ immediate interest underscores the talent he brings to the table.
Having another chance in Pittsburgh, a franchise as stable as in the NFL, could bring out the best in Haskins.
