Dwayne Haskins clears waivers, becomes free agent

Dwayne Haskins is a free agent.

The second year quarterback launched by the Washington Football Team on Monday was not claimed in waivers Tuesday. This means that 31 teams had a chance to claim the choice of the draft for the first round of 2019 and their contract by Tuesday’s deadline, and all were approved.

Haskins is now free to sign with the team of his choice – or, to be more precise – a team that is willing to give him a chance.

The claim would have come with guaranteed money

Haskins had two years left for the four-year $ 14.4 million contract he signed as a rookie. He has $ 4.2 million left in guaranteed bonus money that no one was willing to take after his release from Washington.

Haskins is likely to find a suitor this off-season to hire him on different terms. But the fact that no one is willing to take the $ 4.2 million risk shows how much he has fallen from a first-round perspective in less than two NFL football seasons.

Haskins fought in Washington

Haskins never kept his promise as a first-round choice in Washington. In 16 games, including 13 games, Haskins completed 60.1 percent of his passes for an average of 175.3 yards per game with 12 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. He took 49 bags for a 345 yard loss. Washington had 3-10 in the games it started.

He was cast twice this season by Washington’s first-year coach Ron Rivera. His second bank came on Sunday amid a weak effort against the Carolina Panthers. He also came in the wake of Haskins’ second violation of the COVID-19 protocol of the season. This violation led Rivera to remove him from his captaincy.

Some of Haskins’ struggles are being attributed to long-standing dysfunction in Washington. A team that believes it has the culture to develop you as an effective NFL player will certainly have a chance that Haskins still has an advantage.

There will probably not be a lot of guaranteed money involved.
