DVIDS – News – South Carolina Senate confirms Major General R. Van McCarty as South Carolina’s deputy general

Columbia, SC – The South Carolina Senate confirmed Major General R. Van McCarty of the US Army to continue serving as South Carolina’s deputy general on February 4, 2021. Confirmation allows McCarty to continue serving as head of the South Carolina Army Department for another four years.

McCarty has served as South Carolina’s 29th general aide since February 2019. In this role, he leads the South Carolina Military Department, which includes the South Carolina Army and Air National Guard, Carolina Emergency Management Division. South Carolina, South Carolina State Guard, South Carolina Military Museum, STARBASE Swamp Fox, South Carolina Joint Youth and Service Detachment and South Carolina Job ChalleNGe. Prior to that position, he served as deputy general aide to from 2013.

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster issued a statement on February 4 saying: “Major General McCarty has been a tremendous asset to the South Carolinians and has done an exemplary job leading the National Guard – through natural disasters and , most recently, their response to COVID-19 efforts. His leadership is an extremely important component of the South Carolina Team and has served the people of South Carolina well. I look forward to continuing our partnership and working together. ”

This confirmation signifies the first full four-year term for an assistant general appointed to South Carolina since becoming a cabinet officer. Previously, the deputy general acted as a position elected by the people.

“It has been an honor to serve as an assistant general for the past two years,” said McCarty. “There have been challenges, but I am confident that the hard work and dedication of soldiers, airmen and South Carolina Military Department personnel will overcome the struggles we can face in the next four years. My wife, Susan, and I look forward to having the opportunity to continue serving with the men and women in the South Carolina Military Department. ”
