Affectionately referred to by fans as D&D, the game is known for its wars, treasure hunts, campaigns, camaraderie and reversals of fortune, all in a setting that combines humans, elves, orcs and hundreds of other fantastic creatures. The game is famous for using data from multiple sides in gameplay to promote the imaginary story and is overseen by a host known as the Dungeon Master.
Launched in 1974, the table RPG gained popularity in the 1980s. Its renewed interest sparked in recent years and, in fact, grew again during the pandemic and found a new generation of fans thanks to the game’s live broadcasts on Twitch and YouTube. In a lucrative call in October, Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner said sales have grown 20 percent since 2019. Goldner also revealed that a TV series was being considered.
Paramount and eOne are also putting together a feature set to star Chris Pine, which will be released later this year. And Kolstad is not the only scribe working on a D&D series, as eOne is now working with several writers to develop various projects set in the fantasy universe.
Kolstad helped launch the Wick action franchise, having written the original script and titled Contempt, in the specifications. He also worked on the sequences John Wick: Chapter 2 and John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabelo. He’s a writer for the next Marvel TV series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and co-created the Quibi series Die Hart, starring Kevin Hart and John Travolta.
He is represented by APA, Circle of Confusion and Behr Abramson Levy.
