Duke withdrew from the ACC men’s basketball tournament due to a positive case of COVID-19 within the program, the school announced Thursday morning.

“This will end our 2020-21 season,” Duke athletics director Kevin White said in a statement. “We wish all the teams that still play college basketball, good health and the best for the next few weeks.”

Duke, who was considered a bubble team for the NCAA Tournament and needed another victory or two to secure a spot on the field, was scheduled to play against Florida State on Thursday night in Greensboro, NC

Duke has not missed the NCAA tournament since 1995.

“I am deeply sorry for our players, who have done an excellent job throughout the season taking care of each other and the team,” said coach Mike Krzyzewski in a statement. “I am extremely proud of their collective attitudes and efforts, which could not have been stronger. We are disappointed that we cannot continue fighting together as a group after two excellent days in Greensboro.”

The positive case now becomes a monitoring problem for Louisville, who lost to Duke by 70-56 on Wednesday night. Louisville hopes to receive a general offer for the NCAA Tournament and is within the NCAA’s required period of seven directly negative COVID-19 tests for participants next week in Indianapolis.
