Drew Brees had “one of the greatest stories” in NFL history, says the legendary broadcaster

Drew Brees may have played his last game for the New Orleans Saints.

If the Saints’ 30-20 loss to Tom Brady and Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC playoffs Divisional Round is the last time Brees will wear boots, he will retire as the all-time leader in overtaking yards with 80,358 and the second in passing touchdowns at all times with 571.

Brees, who signed a contract with NBC before the start of the 2020 NFL season, will soon be able to join Al Michaels in the broadcast booth and have a role as a color commentator covering the league he played in for 20 seasons.

Michaels made an appearance on “The Rich Eisen Show” on Monday morning and summed up the career of one of the greatest defenders in NFL history.

“With Brees, you look not just at the numbers, but also at the quality of the individual,” Michaels told Eisen. “It is one of the great stories I have seen in the National Football League.”

Michaels talked about Brees during his time with the San Diego Chargers and how difficult it was to overcome the fact that he was a small quarterback. He also mentioned Brees’s visit to the Miami Dolphins – a team hesitant to sign Brees due to a shoulder injury. Instead, Saints and coach Sean Payton bet on Brees, and the rest is history.

“You have Katrina at the top and the city is a mess,” said Michaels. “It looked like at some point the league would have to take the franchise out of there, and they don’t. They spend the entire year playing in San Antonio and Baton Rouge while the city is being rebuilt.”

Michaels added: “When you look at the body of your career, your work is amazing. Obviously, it goes to the Hall of Fame, first vote, unanimous.”
