Drew Barrymore seems to be everywhere nowadays, with TV shows The Drew Barrymore Show and its cruelty-free makeup line, Flower Beauty, but she has been absent from new films and TV shows.

She told Andy Cohen, when he asked her on SiriusXM Radio Andy on Wednesday, that she wasn’t really thinking of going back. At least not yet.

“If I’m being honest, the answer is no, I don’t want to be on a movie set right now, but that can change when my kids are older,” said Barrymore. “I stopped doing this when my children were born, because I have been doing it since I was in diapers, when I started at 11 months of age. And it was very easy for me to put the film production in a double boiler, so that I could be present and raise my children on my own. I didn’t want to be on a movie set asking the nanny how the kids were doing. I was like, this is not my journey. So, when you step away from it, it’s a lot less scary. “

Barrymore has two daughters – Olive and Frankie, 8, who will be 7 next month – that she shares with ex-husband Will Kopelman.

His last projects were the comedy film of 2020 The Stand-In and, before that, the Netflix series Santa Clarita Diet, in which she played a meat-eating zombie living in the suburbs. Barrymore said the project, which spanned three seasons between 2017 and 2019, was perfectly planned for her.

“I mean, I have to say that I was deeply committed to being a mother to my children. I was like, I don’t know who I am anymore. I think I went too far in the opposite direction,” said Barrymore. “And if I can’t remember that I’m an individual with a skill set, I can die. So, I started playing this woman who eats people and it was exactly how I felt. And it was just perfect, and it was comedy and it was delicious and it was fun and irreverent, and I couldn’t have loved more. And it really saved me. I had put on a lot of weight. I had lost my way. I was going through a really tough divorce in which was the worst thing and everything I didn’t want. that happened. “

Working on the program reminded her that she was more than a fighting mother.

“This show was the best thing that could have happened to me,” said Barrymore. “Then it reminded me not to lose the baby with the bath water, because I don’t want to be filming all the time because I want to raise my children. It’s like you’re that person, don’t forget who you are for your children. I think this is a recipe for disaster and parenting. “
