2021 GOLDEN GLOBE PREDICTIONS:
BEST ACTOR IN MOVEMENT (DRAMA)

AWARDS COMMENT:
The “backward” narrative is usually used when evaluating an Oscar campaign, but every now and then, you begin to notice some veterans who arrive empty-handed in other award venues. Anthony Hopkins (“The Father”) is one of those candidates this year who, despite winning an Oscar for “The Silence of the Lambs”, the 83-year-old has never won a competitive Golden Globe with seven previous nominations (he received the awards Cecil B. DeMille in 2006). Even though Chadwick Boseman (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”) is on a clear path to the Oscars, Hopkins’ null record with the HFPA may come into play in the vote. You can always look for big celebrities to join the fray, and some protagonists can get HFPA’s attention this year – Ben Affleck (“The Way Back”), Tom Holland (“Cherry”), Justin Timberlake (“Palmer”) or John David Washington (“Malcolm & Marie” or “Tenet”) will be in the mix. This “star inclusion” usually occurs at the expense of a person en route to the Dolby Theater, and this can leave Delroy Lindo (“Da 5 Bloods”), Riz Ahmed (“Sound of Metal”) or Steven Yeun (“Minari”) vulnerable (at least in the Globes) .This does not suggest that these big stars do not deserve recognition because they will be. In all, just a year piled in the race for best actor.

About the Golden Globe

O Golden Globe Award, organized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, has been held annually with 93 members since 1944. The group recognizes excellence in film and television, in drama and comedy or musical categories. “La La Land” by Damien Chazelle holds the record for most awards won for a single film with seven. Milos Forman’s “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and Alan Parker’s “Midnight Express” are next in line, with six each. Robert Altman’s “Nashville” has the record for most nominations received for a movie with 11, while Colin Higgins’s “Foul Play”, Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Godfather Part III” and “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” Mike Nichols. share the record for receiving the most nominations and not winning a single prize at seven.
