Dr. Seuss canceled by Virginia School System for ‘Read Across America’ – Deadline

In Virginia, they don’t like green eggs and ham, or Dr. Seuss.

The good Dr. Seuss, also known as Theodor Geisel, was removed from the annual event ‘Read Across America’, a national day to encourage reading. Dr. Seuss’ books have long been the basis of the program.

Dr. Seuss, a major provider of content for television and cinema through characters like The Grinch, the Cat in the Hat and Horton and the World of Whom, was banned because his books allegedly have “strong racial overtones,” according to the school system.

Schools in Loudon County, Virginia, have said they will look for books that they believe are more “inclusive and diverse and reflect our student community,” said a spokesman.
