THEn Friday night, Stephen Colbert from The Late Show was finally able to fulfill a dream he had for a year: to welcome Dr. Anthony Fauci, the country’s leading infectious disease specialist, into the program (virtually, of course).
“I wanted to have you for a year. We try to serve you every week for a year. We could never catch you, ”said Colbert. “Around 20 January, your agenda really opened up. What has changed?”
“Everything!” exclaimed Dr. Fauci.
Yes, while former President Trump is on vacation in Mar-a-Lago and tries to get more than his fair share of credit for the rapid production of several COVID-19 vaccines, President Biden took what Dr. Fauci characterized as “A complete – court press to get more vaccine available. ”About 2 million people were vaccinated a day, and the process is going so well. Biden says that by May 1, all adults in the United States will be eligible for the COVID-19 vaccines.
Dr. Fauci attributed this mainly to improving coordination between the federal and state governments under President Biden.
“In all aspects of the effort, Stephen, it is that before, at the beginning of the previous administration, a lot of discretion, a lot of authority, a lot of decision making was left to the states themselves … but what we have now is more cooperation, collaboration and synergy between the federal government and the states to get things done, ”explained Dr. Fauci. “I have always felt, over the past year, that there should have been more interaction in terms of synergy.”
Colbert started asking Dr. Fauci when things would be back to normal, and he replied that we could start to see a smaller audience participating in various forms of entertainment in the fall. But for now, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases of the United States has urged Americans to continue wearing masks and distancing themselves socially until the number of infections decreases – even if you have already been vaccinated.
“At the moment, although cases are falling in a very sharp decline, in the last few weeks it has started to stagnate a bit and, if it does, it is stagnating at an unacceptably high level – about 50-60,000 new infections per day,” said Dr Fauci. “And every time we saw a plateau at that level, there was always a risk of another wave. What we no what I want to do is get another boost. We want to keep decreasing. “
