Dozens of camp asylum seekers in Matamoros, Mexico, enter the USA

SANTO ANTÓNIO – Asylum seekers who were trapped in Mexico because of moths during the Trump administration are slowly being authorized in the United States.

Thousands of migrants were forced to wait in Mexico under the program known as the Protocol for the Protection of Migrants (MPP), which started in 2019.

A Brownsville city spokesman said, from Wednesday to Sunday, more than 270 asylum seekers were allowed to enter the city.

Brownsville Mayor Trey Mendez said they have worked closely with President Joe Biden’s administration.

“The priority is to get individuals who were at that camp in Matamoros, and that will be around 700. We intend to do this in the next 10 to 14 days,” said Mendez.

The mayor said the migrants come from Cuba and several countries in Central and South America.

“When this Migrant Protection Protocol program was implemented before that, asylum seekers could wait in the United States for the trial date. Right. To see whether or not the court determined that they were, in fact, eligible for asylum. But once the MPP was established, these individuals were asked to stay in Mexico, ”said Mendez.

The mayor said that the people who stayed at the camp went through health checks before the crossing.

“After they cross, we get their information, we help them make arrangements for the trip and then we take them to the sponsor, to the family as soon as possible,” said Mendez.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said there are approximately 25,000 people in the MPP program with active cases.

“This government is certainly very different from the previous one. And as I said, we will see over time how this new policy works, but I am confident that we will see some very positive changes, ”said Mendez.
