During a playthrough broadcast earlier this month, Doom Eternal Director Hugo Martin was asked if the team had already considered developing a female Doom Slayer for the game. His answer was surprisingly complete.

“I’ve already thought about it, actually,” said Martin to Bethesda’s community manager, Joshua Boyle, after a question from a viewer. “I think if we did that, I would like it to be lethal. I think it’s interesting how it would affect glory deaths, the type of weapons she would have, the fighting style. All aggression, absolutely, but a different kind of aggression. I would really strive to allow this to impact the gameplay in a way that is meaningful. I definitely thought about it a lot. “

The staff behind 2016 Doom and 2020 Doom Eternal referred to their main character as a Ferrari, playing as the Doom Slayer it’s fun at any speed. Martin said they would like to discover similar references for any characters they develop, including a hypothetical hunter of destruction.

“How would that affect things?” Martin added. “What kind of analogy could you draw from that and allow it to influence the experience? It would definitely be cool. “

The identity of DoomThe protagonist of – formerly known as Doomguy before being reinvented as the Doom Slayer along with the modern, story-driven reboot – never had much influence on the action of first-person shooting. It is simply a container for the player’s own desire to destroy a band of demons in the most brutal way possible. That said, the fact that Martin thought seriously about developing a female counterpart is very cool, and it should be interesting to see if these ideas make their way into the future Doom projects.
