Senator Mitt Romney, from Utah, faced screams of “traitor” during a flight from Salt Lake City to Washington, DC A video posted on Twitter appears to show a small group of passengers singing, at least one of whom does not appear to be wearing a mask .
“Resign, Mitch!” a woman, seen with a mask on her chin that did not cover her mouth and nose, screamed. She accused Romney of not listening to her constituents.
The woman also tried to promote an unfounded conspiracy theory by linking Romney to Ukrainian gas company Burisma and President-elect Joe Biden.
Romney had previously criticized an investigation conducted by the Senate Homeland Security Committee of Biden’s son Hunter, who was named president of Burisma while Biden served as vice president. Romney did vote in favor of issuing subpoenas on that probe, however.
An additional video posted on Twitter showed Romney being confronted before boarding his flight. In the video, Romney can be seen sitting in a Salt Lake City airport terminal. The woman who appears to be filming confronts Romney, claiming he does not support Donald Trump.
Romney asks the woman to put on a mask, which is required by the airport, although she claims to be two meters away. The woman then appears to be approaching Romney. She calls Romney “a joke” and a “disgusting shame” for not supporting Trump’s reelection proposal.
Romney was unable to endorse Trump in 2020. The 2012 former Republican presidential candidate later admitted that he also did not vote for Trump.
The video was posted by a user whose name, “Qtah”, is an apparent reference to the QAnon conspiracy theory, which the Southern Poverty Law Center notes is an anti-Semitic and anti-LGBTQ “theory” that falsely claims that the world is run by a secret cabal of pedophiles who worship Satan and are plotting against President Trump. “
