Embittered by critical comments from some of the top Republicans, outgoing President Donald Trump is considering launching a new third party, The Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday.

Trump, with just a few hours to go before his presidency, would like to call him a “Patriot Party”, reported the Journal, citing sources “familiar with the matter”.

The report came after Senator Mitch McConnell, the top Republican in the United States Senate, gave a speech on Tuesday blaming Trump for this month’s US Capitol riot.

“The crowd was fed with lies,” he said. “They were provoked by the president and other powerful people.”

It is unclear whether the effort would involve recruiting and executing candidates or serving as a media and commodity empire for the former president.

In 1968, George Wallace, Alabama’s far-right segregationist governor, won five states while running as a candidate for the American Independent Party. No third-party candidate has won a federal state election since, although several independents have been elected to Congress.
