Domtar mill manager says papermaker is committed to Kingsport

The Kentucky governor’s office announced that Canadian secondary aluminum producer Matalco has pledged to build a 135,000-ton-a-year facility in Franklin, Kentucky, about 45 miles north of Nashville, Tennessee.

Matalco Kentucky LLC is a newly formed venture by Matalco (US) Inc., a producer of scrap aluminum alloys that is part of the Giampaolo Group of Companies, headquartered in Brampton, Ontario, Canada.

“We are extremely excited to enter this next phase of our corporate strategic growth plan,” said Robert Roscetti, vice president of corporate development at Matalco Inc. “This investment demonstrates our continued commitment to serving our customers, expanding our market share and direct response to the growth and demand we are experiencing with our products and services. “

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said of the $ 53.5 million project: “I would like to welcome Matalco in Kentucky as the latest addition to our thriving aluminum sector and thank the company for its commitment to create 60 quality jobs for Kentucky residents. Businesses related to aluminum and other primary metals are growing rapidly in our state and helping us to rebuild Kentucky’s economy stronger than ever. Matalco will be a great option in Kentucky, as the company seeks to expand its presence in the United States market. Congratulations to Matalco, Simpson County and the families in the region who will benefit from this great project.

Matalco will occupy space in a 460,000-square-foot facility that previously served as the headquarters of a Quad / Graphics printing operation. The aluminum production line is expected to be operational by mid 2022.

In addition to the new 107-acre Kentucky plant, Matalco produces aluminum billets with scrap, slabs and ingots at units in Ontario, Indiana, Ohio and Wisconsin. The company has about 500,000 tons of aluminum production capacity

According to Governor Beshear’s office, “Matalco joins a primary metals industry in Kentucky that includes 234 facilities that employ nearly 26,000 people across the state. Since 2019, the community has seen 21 announcements of projects related to aluminum, with the expectation of generating more than US $ 625 million in new investments and creating more than 620 full-time jobs ”.
