The Super Bowl result means initial chances for the next NFL champion, but there are also plenty of chances out there regarding possible new teams for some high-profile quarterbacks.
And a new name was added to the mix this week: Russell Wilson. And the Miami Dolphins are among the teams listed as a possibility if the Seahawks decide to switch him.
The Dolphins are tied with the Indianapolis Colts with the seventh best trading chance for Wilson at +1200 (bet $ 100 to win $ 1200), according to SportsBetting.ag.
The Dolphins remain the second favorites to place Deshaun Watson in a trade, if that materializes behind the New York Jets. Dolphins are listed at +350, by SportsBetting.ag, with Jets at +250.
The favorites to get an exchange with Wilson are the Las Vegas Raiders, listed at +300, followed by Dallas (+600), Jacksonville (+700), Washington (+800), San Francisco (+900) and Denver (+1000 ).
The other quarterback with chances on a new team is Carson Wentz and the Chicago Bears are the favorites there with +100, followed by Indianapolis with +150. The Dolphins are tied for 10th with the Dallas Cowboys at +2500.
LAST LEFT
The Minnesota Vikings announced on Tuesday that Klint Kubiak, son of former Broncos and Texans coach Gary Kubiak, would succeed his father as the team’s offensive coordinator.
What does this have to do with dolphins? Well, that leaves them as the only NFL team without an offensive coordinator.
It’s been a week since reports indicated that tight end coach George Godsey and running back coach Eric Studesville would be promoted to serve as co-offensive coordinators, but the team has yet to make it official.
The Dolphins are also without a defensive line coach after parting ways with Marion Hobby, who assumed the same position with the Cincinnati Bengals.
2020 DRAFT STORY
We wrote earlier today about the state of the offensive line, which brought us back to this interesting nugget from SI NFL reporter Albert Breer as part of his Monday Afternoon Quarterback column this week.
It involves facing Tristan Wirfs, the Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers and, yes, the Dolphins.
As Breer explains, the Bucs entered the 2020 draft of the NFL in hopes of getting one of the elite attack attack possibilities in the draft and were holding the 14th overall choice. Three of them – Andrew Thomas, Mekhi Becton and Jedrick Wills – were among the first 11 selections and the Raiders then selected speedy receiver Henry Ruggs III at number 12. The Dolphins were holding 18th and 26th choices after selecting Your Tagovailoa in fifth overall .
That’s when things got interesting and how the Dolphins got involved, according to Breer: “Then came the curved ball – with the Bucs getting information that Miami was working on a No. 18 exchange to hit a tackle, the urgency increased to the Bucs bosses. So they called the Niners, who liked Javon Kinlaw to take the place of DeForest Buckner’s squad, but knew there was a good chance they wouldn’t be in 18th place. to appeal to the Niners that they could just flip the dots, which would allow San Francisco to get Kinlaw and some extra capital. To make a long story short, the Bucs switched places with the Niners for a fourth round pick, with a seven returning to the other side. The Niners stayed with Kinlaw. And the Bucs stayed with Wirfs, who legitimately played as the offensive rookie of the year in Tampa Bay all year long (he is, in fact, the highest scoring rookie tackle in the PFF since 2009). “
As it was, the Dolphins ended up using 18th choice at Austin Jackson, which was generally considered to be the best offensive tackle after that top level.
MARTY’S MIAMI CONNECTION
The NFL lost an all-time great coach on Monday when Marty Schottenheimer passed away at the age of 77.
Arriving in the playoffs 13 times in 21 seasons as head coach and producing 11 seasons with double-digit wins, Schottenheimer also trained many coaches along the way.
Two of them would later become head coaches for the Miami Dolphins. The first was Cam Cameron, who was the offensive coordinator for Schottenheimer’s 2006 San Diego Chargers before training the Dolphins for a forgettable season; the other was Tony Sparano, who coached the tight end for Washington in 2001 before replacing Cameron in 2008.
Schottenheimer played six seasons as a defender in the former AFL before embarking on his long coaching career and recorded his first career interception against the Dolphins at the Orange Bowl in 1966. In that same, he blocked a punt for a safety that closed the scoring in victory Buffalo Bills 29-0.
ROSEN REPEAT
Keeping an eye on transactions around the NFL, we couldn’t help but notice 49ers quarterback Josh Rosen.
He ended the season with them after being released from the Tampa Bay training team, a promotion that ended up costing him a Super Bowl ring.
Obviously, it will be interesting to see what will happen to the young defender’s career, for whom the Dolphins gave up their choices in the second and fifth round only to discard him before his second season with the team.
PROGRAM SNEAK PEEK
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers victory on Sunday means the Dolphins in 2021 will face the defending Super Bowl champion for the third year in a row.
The Dolphins lost to defending champions Kansas City Chiefs in 2020 and split up against defending champions New England Patriots in 2019, losing at home 43-0 before stunning the Patriots at Gillette Stadium 27-24 at the end of the season.
Although dates and times are not announced until April, the Dolphins will face the Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium.
PAYING RESPECT
In closing, I would be remiss not to recognize the three media members who passed away last week, former Miami News colleague Pedro Gomez along with NFL writers Chris Wesseling and Terez Paylor.
Gomez was a colleague of Miami News for a few years in the late 1980s, before the newspaper stopped being published in late 1988. Gomez, of course, went on to cover baseball and ended up arriving on ESPN in 2003, without ever losing his enthusiasm for the profession and the smile we saw for the first time in the early days of his career.
RIP, Pedro, Chris and Terez.
