The Squarespace website company teamed up with Dolly Parton to create a Super Bowl 2021 commercial that reimagined the title track of the 1980 film “9 to 5” to talk about the culture of unrest.
“Working from 5 to 9, doing something on your own now,” Parton, 75, sings in the clip, while bored office workers are excited after personal websites are posted. “Well, you have dreams and you know that they matter. Be your own boss, climb your own ladder. “
Parton does not appear in the 37-second commercial, which Squarespace uploaded to YouTube before Sunday’s big game featuring the Kansas City Chiefs against Tampa Bay Buccaneers. A recent photo of her appears, however, on the cover of a magazine, an actor is shown holding up in a beauty salon while Parton sings, that is, with a website that is worthy of your dream. “
The commercial was directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Damien Chazelle, 36, who directed “La La Land” in 2016 and “Whiplash” in 2014. The choreography for the cubicle was done by Justin Peck, 33, who won a Tony award in 2018 for his choreography in a Broadway reassembly of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Carousel”.
The full two-minute, 31-second single “5 to 9” is available on Spotify. It features the image of a smiling Parton with six arms, all doing various office tasks.
This is the second time that Parton has made major headlines this week, the first because he was twice forced to turn down the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
This is not Squarespace’s first Super Bowl ad: in 2018, the company featured Keanu Reeves in a game-day commercial.
The Super Bowl 2021 starts on Sunday at 6:30 pm EST on CBS.
