Dolly Parton is rethinking her classic workplace anthem for a modern audience.
The country singer, 75, recently reworked her hit single, “9 to 5”, for a new announcement for the upcoming Super Bowl LV – as revealed by Squarespace’s creative director, David Lee.
“How do we approach someone as legendary as Dolly Parton and ask if it’s okay to rewrite and reimagine one of his most iconic songs?” Lee recalled in an email to The Hollywood Reporter. “It turns out that she not only loved the idea, she also loved the rewriting.”
Modernizing “9 to 5” for new audiences affected by the coronavirus pandemic, Parton recorded “5 at 9” – a song that reflects the modern entrepreneur as they move between the 5 to 9 pm side shows

“After a single conversation with her manager, she almost immediately went into the studio to record the track ‘5 to 9’,” said Lee. “Dolly herself has been struggling all her life and can really relate to the message that we were trying to broadcast. “
Although Parton does not appear in the commercial, Lee notes that the singer’s reworked track will serve as “passing the torch to the next generation”.

“Music is the main character and the star of the commercial,” said Lee, noting that he and director Damien Chazelle shared the same vision. “We all agreed that the idea would be stronger with her words and music guiding the narrative – she is passing the torch on to the next generation.”
Lee also talked about Squarespace’s collaborations with other Hollywood stars, including Jeff Bridges and Keanu Reeves.

“We like to present creative work that is unexpected, and the individuals we present always lend their own unique touch and signature to the work,” said Lee in working with other Hollywood celebrities.
Parton’s original song, “9 to 5”, served as the title track for the 1980 film of the same name, which starred the singer alongside Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda. The film “9 to 5” deals with the three women as they work to overthrow the strict and antagonistic boss of his company, played by Dabney Coleman. The film ended up earning Parton an Oscar nomination.
