Dodgers fail to reach arbitration agreements with Walker Buehler, Austin Barnes

So, it looks a little worse than it really is. Today, while the Dodgers were able to close deals on 2021 contracts with Cody Bellinger, Corey Seager and Julio Urias in arbitration, they remained separate on terms with ace Walker Buehler and postseason hero Austin Barnes.

JP Hoornstra, from Southern California News Group reports.

As a superdis, this is Buehler’s first attempt at arbitration. A super two is defined as players in the top 22% with at least two, but not yet three seasons of service. In the case of Barnes, this is his second year as a player eligible for refereeing, coming out of a $ 1.1 million deal for the 2020 season.

As Hoornstra notes, the next step is an arbitration hearing or a multiyear extension with the Dodgers, although the extension was more likely in Buehler’s case with Barnes.

Although salary arbitrage numbers are a little more fickle than last year, thanks to the reduced season of 60 games, Walker Buehler was designed to earn a salary in the range of $ 2.3- $ 3.1 million in 2021, according to MLB Trade Rumors. Barnes was in the $ 1.5 million range.

*UPDATE

MLB insider Mark Feinsand reported Buehler’s salary figures.

Notably, Friday was a kind of flexible deadline for teams and players to reach an agreement. LA agreed to negotiate with Cody Bellinger, Corey Seager, Julio Urias and Dylan Floro. Similar to last season, the Dodgers did not reach agreements with all players eligible for arbitration. However, they ended up working on multi-year deals with two (Chris Taylor and Max Muncy) before a potential date for the arbitration hearing.

If Buehler and Barnes fail to strike a deal with the club in time, each side will face a panel of three in an often uncomfortable battle. The hearings will take place from February 1st to 21st this year.
