BUENOS AIRES (Sputnik) – A Mexican doctor who received the Pfizer vaccine against the coronavirus COVID-19 was admitted to an intensive care unit with seizures, breathing difficulties and possible encephalomyelitis, the country’s Ministry of Health said on Saturday.

“The 32-year-old doctor who received the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine was admitted to the intensive care unit […] after developing skin rashes, seizures, muscle weakness and breathing difficulties half an hour after vaccination, “said the ministry.

The cause of the adverse reaction, which occurred while the doctor was still in the observation area after inoculation, is currently under investigation.

According to the ministry, the preliminary diagnosis is encephalomyelitis.

“The doctor is under observation and treatment by specialists in critical medicine to reduce the cerebral inflammation presented. Specialized intensive treatment based on steroids and anticonvulsants will continue to reduce the risk of sequelae, ”said the Ministry of Health.

The patient would have a history of allergic reactions to other medications, such as trimethoprim with sulfamethoxazole, which can cause severe symptoms, especially skin rashes, angioedema and anaphylactic reaction, or even death.

The Mexican Ministry of Health said in a statement that, according to current scientific data on the Pfizer and BioNTech vaccines, “no person had previously developed encephalitis after the vaccine was administered”.
