A tired UK doctor left the hospital where he spent New Year’s Eve treating patients with COVID-19 and came across a crowd of unmasked protesters shouting “COVID is a scam”.
“I am disgusted, but mostly heartbroken,” Matthew Lee tweeted along with the video he shot hundreds of protesters outside London’s St Thomas Hospital.
“I wish people could see the amount of COVID-19 and death in hospitals, and the sacrifices that healthcare professionals make. This week alone was very difficult. Your ignorance is hurting others. I would really like people to stay safe. “
The UK is experiencing a large increase in coronavirus cases as a highly contagious variant of the deadly virus that strikes the population.
On New Year’s Eve, Londoners were warned not to party in groups outside, and indoor events that mixed groups from different families were banned, The Independent reported.
Lee’s post took off, being shared and retweeted over 24,000 times.
The personality of TV Piers Morgan was the one who noticed, tweeting this he was “boiling over” Lee’s video. “If it’s a scam, we’ll take all of these imbeciles into the secret wing without PPE. See how brave they feel when faced with the reality of people suffocating dying.
Lee, a Hong Kong native who makes videos about his life in medicine, was surprised by the response. “Thank you all for the support!” he tweeted on New Year’s Day. “Covid does not discriminate and we are all in this together”.
