Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid is betting heavily on the attack and there’s no denying that, but he’s not just a one-way player. The big guy is also one of the best defenders in the NBA.
Embiid is one of those kick blockers that make defenders think twice, sometimes even three, before kicking him. His instincts and time to get a blocked shot are impeccable and this allows the Sixers to be one of the best defensive teams in the league.
Even in the pick-and-roll game, coach Doc Rivers is able to use Embiid more to control the ball while keeping it in the paint to protect the rim. It offers a lot of versatility and this is something that Rivers didn’t realize when he took office.
“I thought Brett (Brown) did great things with Joel in the pick-and-roll last year,” said Rivers. “We put him up every now and then, so I think we moved a little bit more, but Jo has been fantastic and I thought he was in last year too. He’s a better defender, I’ll say that, training him than I thought, which helps me, obviously. “
The Embiid’s ability to pick and roll while turning and protecting the rim is impressive. He is one of those people who has a lot of size and skill and that allows him to be the defender he is.
“He’s just smarter,” added Rivers. “Smarter and able to cover the ground. With that size, I never realized that he had the feet he has and his IQ also helps. He’s a very smart defensive player, so you don’t really know that until you train a guy. I was very impressed with him. “
As the Sixers prepare to face the Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday, they will need Embiid to continue their strong defense game against a tough Cavs team.
