DK Metcalf about to break Steve Largent’s 35 year old Seahawks record

DK Metcalf, in his second season in the NFL, is about to break a 35-year-old record.

With just six yards in Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers, Metcalf will surpass Steve Largent’s single season franchise record of 1,287 yards received, set in 1985.

The young Seattle Seahawks wideout said that after generating 900 yards as a rookie, he realized that the record was in his sights.

“I knew that breaking it would be on the agenda this year,” said Metcalf, via the Associated Press.

After falling to the end of the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Metcalf began discussing the league’s biggest threats after just two seasons.

“Just to break a record that has been around for so long, it is a blessing to be in this position and an incredible opportunity that lies ahead,” said Metcalf.

Metcalf generated 12 receptions for 161 yards and two touchdowns in Week 8 against the 49ers. In three career games against San Francisco, the wideout averaged 8.0 receptions, 104.0 yards per game and a score. Metcalf is one of four players in the Super Bowl era with more than 300 receiving yards and three or more touchdowns in his first three games against the 49ers. Others: Terrell Owens, Davante Adams and Ahmad Rashad.

The six yards required for the team record should be easy on Sunday.

Metcalf is one of three players selected out of the first round (since 1970), with more than 100 receptions, more than 2,000 reception yards and more than 15 reception touchdowns in his first two seasons, joining names like Isaac Bruce and Marques Colston.

Teammate Tyler Lockett is also 36 yards from reaching 1,000 this season, which would make him and Metcalf just the second pair in Seattle history to each reach the century mark in the same season, joining Brian Blades and Joey Galloway, who accomplished the feat in 1995.

After breaking Largent’s team record, Metcalf is eyeing Calvin Johnson’s one-season NFL record set in 1964.

“I have to start small with the Largent record,” said Metcalf. “And then, hopefully, proceed to Calvin’s record.”

With DK’s size and speed combination being the closest we’ve seen since Johnson abruptly retired, it would be appropriate if the Seahawks receiver eventually bit Megatron’s heels.
