DJI Mavic 2 Pro melted by volcano and still flies

A Swiss photographer and aerial videographer captured absolutely stellar images of that volcano that is erupting in Iceland. And he got so close that his DJI Mavic 2 Pro is now basically a melted bubble. However, he came back.

The eruption of a volcano just a short distance from Reykjavik has attracted thousands of people who want to witness one of nature’s shows in action. And some of those with a particular interest? Drone photographers and cinematographers. We have already shown some of the remarkable images made by drones on the Fagradalsfjall volcano.

But today’s edition is really incredible.

Hot photos

With a terrestrial camera, you simply choose the best lens for the photo and shoot away from a safe distance: close enough to get what you need, but far enough that you are protected from lava flow and not uncomfortably hot or subject to intense vapors.

With a drone, it is obviously different. You can fly while you are parked in a very safe distance, while bringing your drone as close as you’re willing to risk. Of course, staying very close to the mouth of the volcano will produce incredible images, but it will also put your drone at greater risk. Because, and needless to say, the closer the drone is, the greater the risk.

And it’s not just because of the intense heat. This volcano continues to spew clumps of lava into the air, smaller pieces of which begin to turn into pumice almost immediately. So you have to be aware of the heat and projectiles.

Swiss visuals pro

One of the people who couldn’t resist capturing this incredible spectacle is Stefan Forster, a Swiss photographer and director of aerial photography. Stefan is a true professional, as you can see from the pictures on his website PhotoCube.ch.

He has spent a lot of time near the volcano, working on a longer film production. And he really went beyond the limits of what a drone can do in these circumstances. In search of the perfect shot, your Mavic 2 Pro found withering heat. And although the drone doesn’t have a temperature sensor, check out this incredible Facebook post:

Worth it…

You need to ask yourself: was it worth sacrificing a relatively expensive drone? Well, all you need to do is take a look at the trailer for a longer film that Stefan is working on:

No wonder the drone came back melted!

We contacted Stefan yesterday and again today; we hope to ask him some questions. If we catch him, we’ll update the story!
