Walt Disney World Resort employees were harassed by angry guests while trying to enforce COVID-19 health and safety guidelines, according to an Orlando Sentinel report.

An anonymous security guard at a hotel at the Florida resort told Sentinel that he was spit on reminding a guest to wear a mask.

The guest reportedly rejected a request to follow coronavirus protocols, spit on the guard and then fled to the hotel, according to the local newspaper. Part of the guest’s saliva fell on the worker’s forehead, the newspaper reported.

Another employee told Sentinel that ensuring that guests wear masks often results in harassment. “There is never a day when I don’t have a story,” the anonymous worker told the newspaper. “I cried the first week I started. It was not a good time. Imagine going to work every day where people make fun of you.”

One incident left this worker particularly shaken. “I had a guest literally in my face and literally cursing myself,” she told Sentinel. “If I honestly didn’t have good co-workers, I would have given up now.”

Despite these reports, a representative from the Orland resort said that most visitors obey the rules. “The guests have overwhelmingly supported our protocols,” said the representative. “Millions of visitors visit our theme parks each year and, on rare occasions, when things like this happen, we hold them responsible.”

The resort reopened on July 11, after a 116-day closure. It started to operate with reduced capacity.

Although Florida has never enacted a state mask order, the theme insists that all visitors must wear facial covers.

Guests must also undergo temperature tests and not show up if they experience symptoms of coronavirus, according to the Walt Disney World Resort website.
