Early Thursday, Bassett released his new song, “Lie, Lie, Lie”. The track’s release comes amid rumors of rivalry with its co-star “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series”, Olivia Rodrigo, who last week released her debut single, “Driver’s License”, which fans believe to be about Bassett.
Bassett and Rodrigo, 17, had love interests in “HSMTMTS” and reportedly dated last year.
In Bassett’s song – which he said he wrote after discovering that a friend “lied” about him behind his back – he sings: “I know what you say about me / I hope it makes you happy / You may not seem to get me out of your mind (get me out of your mind) / Oh, I know you’re lying blatantly / You told them the lies you told me / I’ve had enough this time (enough this time). “
The lyrics of the song further fueled fan theories about Bassett and Rodrigo’s alleged rivalry, with many concluding that Bassett’s music is about Rodrigo. In addition, at one point in the video clip “Lie, Lie, Lie”, Bassett can be seen driving a car alone, which could be a reference to Rodrigo’s “driver’s license”.
