Disney is adding another TV show to its list of Marvel content in development for Disney +.
On Monday, the company announced that it had signed a five-year contract with “Black Panther” director Ryan Coogler and Proximity Media to create a television program exclusively for Disney.
As part of that agreement, Coogler will create a series set in Wakanda, the fictional African country that lived the Black Panther. There are now almost a dozen Marvel programs underway for the streaming service.
The deal also allowed Coogler’s company to develop television programs for other Disney divisions.
“Ryan Coogler is a unique storyteller whose vision and reach have made him one of the outstanding filmmakers of his generation,” said Bob Iger, executive president of The Walt Disney Company.
Coogler’s “Black Panther” not only stood out at the global box office, grossing $ 1.3 billion worldwide, but was also the first superhero film to receive a nomination for best film of all time.
The director, known as “Fruitvale Station” and “Creed”, was scheduled to begin filming a sequel to “Black Panther” in March, but the filming was set aside after the sudden and unexpected death of star Chadwick Boseman. Boseman, 43, battled colon cancer for four years, but kept his diagnosis hidden from the public.
The sequel is now set to start shooting in Atlanta in July, with Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke and Angela Bassett, all looking forward to repeating their roles.
