“Titles with a content warning related to negative representations and / or mistreatment of people or cultures have been excluded,” confirms the company in its online help center. These exclusions apply only to children’s accounts, which means that the identified titles will remain in the Disney + library for regular accounts, with a content warning message displayed before the appeal.
This announcement was made shortly after The Walt Disney Company launched its Stories Matter initiative. As part of this effort, the company has called on a group of experts to advise and evaluate its content and ensure that it accurately represents the global audience. On the website, Disney included examples of disclaimers now included in selected titles, along with an explanation of some of the negative representations.
The disclaimer says: “This program includes negative representations and / or mistreatment of people or cultures. These stereotypes were wrong at the time and are wrong now. Instead of removing this content, we want to recognize its harmful impact, learn from it and start a conversation to create a more inclusive future together Disney is committed to creating stories with inspiring and ambitious themes that reflect the rich diversity of human experience around the world. “
This updated content notice began to appear in front of controversial films and shorts at the Disney + library late last year.Disney further demonstrated the changes being implemented across the company by announcing plans to update its Jungle Cruise attraction at Disneyland and Walt Disney World, after receiving criticism for years about outdated and insensitive representations of cultures. The river cruise will receive an updated storyline to better “reflect and value the diversity of the world around us”.
Jungle Cruise is not the only theme park attraction to be redesigned; Disney previously revealed that Splash Mountain will be “completely reimagined” as a Princess and the Frog tour of Disneyland and Walt Disney World after fans requested a review of the tour because it was inspired by (and even includes) images of Song of the South, a film with racially insensitive representations.
