Conservative actress Gina Carano found rare support among liberals in the mainstream media after being fired from “The Mandalorian” for posting on social media and being dismissed by her agency UTA.
In an essay entitled “Firing actors for being conservative is another Hollywood blacklist,” New York magazine columnist Jonathan Chait began by recalling the polarization period in the entertainment industry, when alleged communists were banned from working amid the red fear of 1940s and 1950s.
Chait rejected the “anti-Semitic” accusations that Carano has faced in an Instagram post that compared the political divide in America to events that led to the persecution of Jews in Nazi Germany.

“I don’t think this post is particularly enlightening. But exaggerated comparisons with Nazi Germany are quite common and, more specifically, are not anti-Semitic. There is no evidence of sympathy for the Nazis or guilt for their victims,” Chait wrote.
“There is no tip anywhere in [Carano’s] post of sympathy for the Nazis or guilt for their victims. “
The “Intelligencer” writer then called attention to the “most impressive” thing like news coverage of Carano’s dismissal, which was “the total absence of any scrutiny from his employer or his (now ex-agency)”.

“The tone of the report simply conveys his posts as if they were a series of minor crimes, the punishment of which is inevitable and self-evidently justified. The principle that an actor should be fired for expressing unhealthy political views simply disappeared,” Chait explained. .

“If you think the black list is only bad if your targets have sensible opinions, I have bad news for you about communism,” he wrote.
Chait then entered the history of blacklist screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, who “followed the line of the Communist Party in the era of Stalin” during the height of Macarism.
“Technically, studios had a legal right to refuse to associate with people with abominable beliefs. But a more just and liberal society is capable of creating some space between an individual’s political views and the position of his employer, ”wrote Chait. “A Dalton Trumbo should have been able to keep his screenplay job, although he supported a murderous dictator like Stalin. And actors should be able to work even if they supported an authoritarian fanatic like Donald Trump.”

Chait’s column was well received by other liberal media figures, including MSNBC host Chris Hayes.
“I have my doubts here and there, but I basically agree with that,” Hayes tweeted.
After cutting his ties with Disney, Carano announced that he will partner with Ben Shapiro’s The Daily Wire, and develop and star in his own film as part of the conservative channel’s growing entertainment division.
