Discovery Plus, Discovery’s new streaming channel, launches today and does so on both Roku and Amazon’s Fire TV. This means that it is avoiding the confusion that ensued when the streaming channels HBO Max and Peacock were launched in 2020 without the initial options of Roku and Fire TV.
“As we go live with Discovery + today in the U.S., we are excited to work with the best partners to make it available wherever our fans are,” said David Zaslav, president and CEO of Discovery Inc., in an announcement .
Roku is an important partner for new streamers, who bring their audience to approximately 46 million active accounts. WarnerMedia finally reached an agreement to bring its streaming channel HBO Max to Roku in December, after a months-long standoff over Roku’s fees and just before the launch of the Wonder Woman 1984, which debuted on HBO Max and in theaters on Christmas Day. Peacock was launched in July and reached an agreement with Roku in September. HBO Max came to Fire TV devices in November.
Discovery Plus will include several programs derived from Discovery Channel fans, such as 90 Day Groom, as well as new versions of old favorites. The schedule will include new House Hunters Series; a new food and travel series by Bobby Flay and Giada de Laurentiis from the Food Network; one new Long Island Medium Series; and a new series of Chip and Joanna Gaines, from Magnolia Network, hosts of Fixer Upper series of home repairs.
In addition to Roku and Amazon Fire TV, Discovery Plus is fully integrated with the Apple TV app and is available on iOS devices; Google and Android platforms, including Chromecast; Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Series S; as well as in 2017 and the latest Samsung smart TVs. Not yet available for PlayStation.
Discovery Plus will start at $ 4.99 per month for the ad-supported version, and an ad-free version is available for $ 6.99 per month.
