Discover Hybrid eSTOL, an entirely new category of electric aircraft – Robb Report

Swiss manufacturer Manta created an original version of the eVTOL aircraft, designed to go up and down like helicopters. Its single-seat ANN1 and double-seat AN2 are actually eSTOLs – the S stands for “short area” – which perform vertical takeoffs and landings, but can also land like conventional aircraft on runways up to 100 yards.

The advantages of the new design include greater range and payload, as using even a very short lane consumes much less battery power than standing upright. ANNs also have small fuel-powered generators that create electricity to keep batteries charged longer and make recharging faster.

In addition to the increased range, they are probably the most fun of any of the new electric aircraft, as they were also designed for the pleasure of flying. The lightweight composite carbon structure and double wing, V-tail design generate more speed, while enhancing climbing performance and maneuverability.

With takeoff and vertical landing capabilities, in addition to being able to land like a traditional airplane, the biplace would work well as a space shuttle for a superyacht.

Four electric fans attached to the wings tilt to direct the thrust, and recent tests on a three-meter-long scale model show that they will take the new Mantas at a cruising speed of 186 mph with a range of 373 miles.

The single-seat ANN1 in particular was designed for extreme performance and aimed at “personal mobility”, with the company describing it as a “racing vehicle”. This is rare in the eVTOL world, where these futuristic vessels start out with commercial goals, be it regional transport or air taxi service. Usually, the idea of ​​individual ownership is a distant consideration.

Although Manta envisages practical uses for its eVTOLs, including environmental, police, EMT and search and rescue operations, its sleek black ANN2 looks like it would be an exceptional business aircraft. It also foresees other models that could serve as an auxiliary ship between the superyachts and the land landing sites.
