She is a father and babysitting the children, for God’s sake. Despite Twitter’s fervent hopes earlier this week, no, there is no cut in Mrs. Doubtfire could qualify for an NC-17 rating. After a viral tweet circulated, allegedly based on a 2015 interview with director Christopher Columbus, suggesting that an unspeakably adult version of the 1993 Robin Williams comedy could be assembled from the late comedian’s improvised lines, Colombo launched his dreams into Weekly entertainment on Friday. “I just [previously] used the phrase NC-17 as a joke, ”he confirmed. “There couldn’t be an NC-17 version of the film.”
But if it makes you feel better, and it probably will, Robin Williams reportedly increased his snacks well beyond the film’s PG-13 ratings, since Columbus captured the scripted shots he needed to get through the Motion Picture Association of America without no fainting or spontaneous vomiting.
“The reality is that there was an agreement between Robin and me, which was, he would do one or two, three takes with a script. And then he said, ‘So let me play.’ And we were basically going to do between 15 and 22 takes, I think 22 is the maximum I can remember, ”recalls Columbus. “He sometimes entered a territory that would not be appropriate for a PG-13 film, but certainly appropriate and hilarious for a censored film.”
“I would be open to perhaps making a documentary about the production of the film and allowing people to see certain scenes reissued in a censored version,” says the director. “The problem is that I don’t remember most of it. I only know what’s in the movie right now because it’s been a long time. But I remember it was absurdly funny stuff. “
