DHEC has released the following information about school district reports:

  • The report does not mean that students, teachers or staff contracted the virus at school. Unlike a nursing home, where residents live on the premises, students, teachers and teachers come and go from school and are active in their community and can come into contact with the virus outside the school environment.
  • The reports will include students from kindergarten to 12th grade in public and private schools. At the moment, college students will not be included in these reports, although several colleges and universities are choosing to advertise cases on their websites. Students who reside in South Carolina to go to school are included in South Carolina’s daily numbers, reported by the county based on their current address.
  • Only those individuals who physically attend school on a regular basis will be included in the counts. Sports coaches, tutors, part-time staff, kitchen staff, custody and maintenance staff and other school staff with physical presence in schools will be included in these reports. Students who participate in virtual education, but are regularly on campus for extracurricular activities, will also be included.
  • Some schools may choose to self-report cases before they are reflected in DHEC reports twice a week. There may be a delay in the cases that are included in DHEC’s online reports, as the agency works to receive the information, analyze it and confirm it before submitting it online.
