Detroit residents aged 60 or older with certain medical conditions can now receive the COVID-19 vaccine

DETROIT – Detroit residents aged 60 and over and certain chronic medical conditions can now get the COVID-19 vaccine, Mayor Mike Duggan said.

“Detroit is committed to making vaccines available to all of our most vulnerable residents,” said Duggan. “People with diabetes, heart disease, hypertension or other chronic conditions have mortality rates from COVID that are much higher than the general population.”

Vaccinations will be carried out at the TCF Center, said Duggan. Eligible residents must make an appointment at the TCF from Wednesday until calling 313-230-0505.

Wheelchair accessible transportation can be arranged for calling 313-208-7364.

“I am happy with the governor’s support, as we are able to reduce the age of people with chronic diseases to 60. It is my hope that in the near future we will be able to reduce it again to 55 years,” said Denise Fair, director of public health from Detroit said.

When patients arrive at their appointments, they will be asked to show evidence of their medical condition, such as a healthcare provider note, insurance record, prescription bottle, or any other document that verifies their condition.

Last week, Duggan made residents with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their resident caregivers eligible for the vaccine. He also announced Saturdays for the Elderly – a series of vaccination events on weekends for Detroit residents aged 65 and over.

Duggan announced a program to provide $ 2 trips to the TCF center for Detroit residents who do not have their own transportation. This program includes wheelchair accessible vehicles for people with physical disabilities.

Call center team members will contact each scheduled person before their second appointment to remind them. Residents will receive specific instructions on when and where to arrive at the TCF Center and where to complete a basic consent form.

After receiving the vaccines, residents must remain in their vehicles inside the TCF garage for about 15 minutes to make sure that they do not experience any side effects. Medical staff members will be available to help anyone who experiences any side effects.
