Detroit Lions is reportedly trying to negotiate QB backup Chase Daniel

ALLEN PARK – Detroit Lions put another quarterback on the commercial block, this time buying Chase Daniel according to ESPN.

Daniel signed a three-year, $ 13.05 million contract with Detroit in the last off-season. That’s a lot of money for a guy who started five games and gave 218 passes in 10 years, but Lions haven’t invested much in the position over the years and were then 0-8 when Matthew Stafford was removed from previous season games.

Then general manager Bob Quinn opened his checkbook to Daniel last season, thinking the veteran would give him some stability if Stafford fell again. But Daniel was quite ineffective in four games last season, including not even crossing the midfield in almost three quarters of work against Tampa Bay. He finished 29 of 43 passes overall for 264 yards, a touchdown, two interceptions and one passer rating of 79.9.

Now the change is taking place in the position of defender, where Detroit has already agreed to send Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams. The deal cannot be finalized until March 17, but Lions will be given a choice of the third round this year, a choice of the first round next year and another choice of the first round in 2022.

Lions are also getting Jared Goff into the business. Goff will account for $ 27.8 million against the limit, in addition to the $ 17.8 million in dead money involved in Stafford. This represents $ 44.8 million in defenders in a year when the limit will only decrease for the second time in NFL history.

This has always made Daniel – limit reached: $ 5.75 million – a potential victim. Now it’s done, freeing up another $ 2.3 million in space for the free agency.

David Blough remains in the squad and becomes the favorite to support Goff next season, although Lions may look to add another defender to the draft, and perhaps even with the seventh overall choice. Trevor Lawrence is expected to be first overall, although guys like Justin Fields, Zach Wilson, Trey Lance and Mac Jones are other potential options for the first round.
